Certainty and Uncertainty

What happens when you know you need to move, but you can’t?

When there is something the Universe knows you need to know, understand, or do, it will often present that idea to you in numerous ways over the course of several days or even weeks.

For me, over this past week, it has been the principle of certainty and uncertainty.

Now the question is why.

I don't know yet.

However, I do know that when something keeps showing up for me, I need to pay attention. I need to examine it. I need to become curious about why it is presenting itself and how it may be impacting my life.

So that is what I am doing.

And I thought I would invite you into the exploration with me.

Let's begin with certainty.

Certainty is the feeling of being sure. It can be a firm belief in something we know to be true. It can also be the confidence we feel when we have enough information to make a decision and move forward.

Certainty is important.

It gives us stability. It can help quiet the constant questioning that keeps us circling around a decision. It allows us to commit ourselves to a direction and take action.

In many ways, certainty helps us move.

But there is another side to certainty that I have been thinking about.

What happens when we believe we must have certainty before we can move?

What happens when we need to know that something will work before we are willing to try it?

Or when we need to know what will happen next before we are willing to make a change?

At that point, our need for certainty can begin to hold us in place.

And that brings us to uncertainty.

Uncertainty is the condition of not knowing.

We may not know what something means yet. We may not know where a decision will lead. We may not know how a situation will unfold or what the final outcome will be.

Most of us are much less comfortable with uncertainty.

Not knowing can feel unsettling. We like to understand what is happening. We like to feel that we have some idea of where we are going.

Yet uncertainty has an important place in our lives too.

Uncertainty creates room for something we cannot yet see to emerge.

And when I think about that through the lens of the Creative Process, it becomes even more interesting.

Whenever we create something new, there is almost always a period of uncertainty.

We can know what we want. We can set an intention. We can feel clear about the next step.

But we usually cannot see the entire path before we begin.

So perhaps certainty and uncertainty are not opposing forces at all.

Perhaps there is a place for both.

Maybe certainty gives us something within ourselves to stand on, while uncertainty asks us to remain open to what has not yet been revealed.

And that brings me back to the question that started all of this for me.

Why has the principle of certainty and uncertainty been showing up so strongly in my life this week?

I still don't know.

But I have a feeling that somewhere inside this question is something I am meant to see.

What comes to mind is that this is a development meant to reveal to me where I am stuck.

I know I need to move. Yet because I cannot see everything about the next steps, I delay, delay, delay in making the choice to take the next step.

I keep waiting for more information. I keep thinking that if I just wait a little longer, something will happen that will make the decision easier. Maybe I will suddenly know exactly what to do. Maybe the whole path will become clear.

But that is not how life usually works.

Most of the time, we are only given enough information to take the next step. Then, once we take it, something else becomes visible.

I know that. I teach that. And yet I can still find myself wanting to know more before I move.

And if I wait long enough, that uncertainty slowly manifests into fear.

The mind starts filling in the spaces where there are no answers. It begins creating possibilities about what could go wrong. What began as simply not knowing can gradually become something much heavier.

And the one thing I am certain about is this.

I don't want that!

I do not want uncertainty to become fear simply because I refused to move.

So now I have to ask myself another question.

How much do I really need to know before I take the next step?

Maybe I do not need to know where the whole road leads. Maybe I just need to know enough to move from where I am.

And maybe the certainty I am looking for is not certainty about what will happen next.

Maybe it is certainty that I can trust myself enough to take the next step and respond to whatever is revealed after I do.

In this process is the lesson waiting for me to adopt.

What I am certain of is I trust and believe in myself.

That triumphs over everything in the end.

So the path may be uncertain in spots. That does not mean it is negative.

It means it is full of opportunity for me to reinforce my UNSHAKEABLE BELIEF IN MYSELF!

Now we are cookin!

I have all I need for now. I am open to what is next on this journey.

Hmmm... To be continued.

A Gentle Invitation

Maybe there is something showing up repeatedly in your life too.

Something you know needs your attention.

You may even know that it is time to move, yet you keep waiting because you cannot see enough of what comes next.

Take some time this week to notice where that may be happening.

You do not have to force an answer.

Just be willing to see what is there.

A Quiet Question for the Week

Where am I waiting for certainty about what will happen when I already have enough certainty in myself to move?

Sit with that for a while.

See what comes up.

A Small Invitation

Choose one thing you have been delaying because you cannot see the whole path.

Then ask yourself:

What am I certain of right now?

Do not try to solve everything.

See if what you already know is enough to take one next step.

LifePath Readings

Sometimes you know something in your life needs to change, but you cannot quite see what is happening or where to go next.

That is often when a LifePath Reading can be helpful.

A LifePath Reading gives us a place to look more deeply at what is showing up in your life and what may be asking for your attention.

If you have been feeling that pull, you can learn more or schedule your reading at:

Closing Reflection

Maybe the question is not whether you can be certain about everything that comes next.

Maybe the question is whether you are certain enough about yourself to begin.

This Week's Mantra

I trust and believe in myself.
I have all I need for now.
I am open to what is next.
