What Are You Committed To?
What Are You Committed To?
Last week, we talked about Commitment, the fifth C in the 5 C’s Life Principle: Courage, Confidence, Clarity, Certainty, and Commitment.
We talked about Commitment as the energy that carries you when there is uncertainty in the field. We also arrived at this definition:
Commitment is focused devotion to your own Creative Process rather than comparison, outside approval, or distraction.
But as I continued to sit with Commitment this week, another question naturally arose.
What am I committed to?
And I realized that question takes us much deeper.
The question is not first: “What is my next step?”
It is: “What am I committed to?”
And that is much deeper than a task. A task is something you do. You finish it and move on. Commitment is about what matters enough to you that you are willing to keep choosing it as you live and create your life.
It may be a commitment to peace in your life.
It may be freedom.
It may be meaningful work, financial fulfillment, spiritual growth, a loving relationship with yourself, or creating something your heart has held for a long time.
The task is only one expression of that commitment. That gives us an important distinction:
The task is not the commitment.
The task is an action you take because of what you are committed to.
And then comes the real question underneath all of it:
What is so important to me, in my spirit, that I am willing to stay devoted to creating it in my life?
That brings us right back to what we have already established:
Commitment is focused devotion to your own Creative Process.
Now we can see what that devotion is actually focused on. It is focused on what you know is for you. What your heart desires. What you believe belongs in the life you are creating.
And once you know that, then Commitment can ask:
What action supports that today?
If you really want the strongest measure of motivation to do or be something, it comes from what you are committed to as the person you are. And at the deepest level, invariably, that commitment is a principle.
For example, I live my life committed to integrity in everything I do. From there, I always do my best. When I know I have acted from integrity and done my best, there is very little room for the negative self-worth, second-guessing, or criticism that can otherwise follow us around. Any principle you choose to truly live from can begin to lead you down this path.
You begin to be able to say:
I live my life from __________ as I create every day.
What belongs in that blank for you? If you have never asked yourself this question, take a moment.
Get quiet.
Put your hand on your heart. And ask yourself:
What am I committed to?
Then listen. That changes the way I think about my own tasks.
My task list is not the source of my commitment.
The tasks are simply things I do in service to something that matters deeply to me. So before I ask myself what needs to get done, there is an even more important question:
What am I committed to creating in my life?
Once I know that, I can begin to look at my choices and actions differently. Does this action support what I say I am committed to? Does it move me toward what matters to me? Is it part of what is mine to create? And if the answer is yes, then the task has meaning beyond simply getting something done. It becomes an expression of my commitment to myself.
Maybe that is why Commitment has become such an important fifth stage in the Creative Process.
It keeps bringing us back to ourselves.
Back to what matters.
Back to what we desire.
Back to what we know is ours to create.
So this week, before you make another list of what you need to accomplish, ask yourself:
What am I committed to?
Not what are you supposed to be doing.
Not what someone else thinks you should want.
Not what everyone around you is creating.
What matters to you?
What continues to call to you from within? What do you know, in your spirit, you want to experience in this life?
And once you know that, ask:
What action supports that today?
Now we are no longer just completing tasks.
We are consciously participating in our own Creative Process.
